Author Cochrane, Charles Norris
Charles Norris Cochrane (1889-1945) was a Canadian historian and philosopher. He was born in Omenee, Ontario, in the Kawartha Lakes Region. He was educated at the University of Toronto and was appointed to the Faculty of Ancient History in 1919. His work centered on the foundational aspects of Western civilization and his realization that it was doomed to oscillate between idealism (animal faith) and naturalism (the detritus of skepticism). His most notable work, Christianity and Classical Culture, studies the emergence of Christianity from the ruins of Roman civilization. He also wrote Thucydides and the Science of History.
