John Maynard Keyne:

Born on 5 June 1883 in Cambridge into a well-to-do academic family. His father was an economist and a philosopher, his mother became the town’s first female mayor. He excelled academically at Eton as well as Cambridge University, where he studied mathematics. He also became friends with members of the Bloomsbury group of intellectuals and artists.

After graduating, Keynes went to work in the India Office, and simultaneously managed to work on a dissertation – often during office hours – which earned him a fellowship at King’s College. In 1908, he quit the civil service and returned to Cambridge. Following the outbreak of World War One, Keynes joined the treasury, and in the wake of the Versailles peace treaty, he published ‘The Economic Consequences of the Peace’ in which he criticised the exorbitant war reparations demanded from a defeated Germany and prophetically predicted that it would foster a desire for revenge among Germans. This best-selling book made him world famous.

During the inter-war years, Keynes amassed a considerable personal fortune from the financial markets and, as bursar of King’s College, greatly improved the college’s financial position. He became a prominent arts patron and board member of a number of companies. In 1926, he married Lydia Lopokova, a Russian ballerina.

Keynes’ best-known work, ‘The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money’, was published in 1936, and became a benchmark for future economic thought. It also secured his position as Britain’s most influential economist, and with the advent of World War Two, he again worked for the treasury. In 1942, he was made a member of the house of lords.

During the war years, Keynes played a decisive role in the negotiations that were to shape the post-war international economic order. In 1944, he led the British delegation to the Bretton Woods conference in the United States. At the conference he played a significant part in the planning of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was an American activist writer whose involvement with socialism led to a writing assignment about the plight of workers in the meatpacking industry, eventually resulting in the best-selling 1906 novel The Jungle. During the 1920’s, his novels fared far better than his unsuccessful political ventures of running for Congress on the Socialist Party ticket and the founding of the California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, with the 1927 publication of Oil! about the Teapot Dome scandal; and the 1928 publication of Boston about the Sacco and Vanzetti case. Eighty years after it appeared in print, Oil! would be made into the Academy Award-winning film There Will Be Blood. Sinclair later changed his political affiliation and ran unsuccessfully as the Democrat Party candidate for California governor in 1934.In 1940, Sinclair published the historical novel World’s End. It was the first of what would be 11 books in the “Lanny Budd” series, named for the protagonist who somehow manages to be present at all of the most significant world events in the early 20th century. The 1942 installment in the series, Dragon’s Teeth, which explores the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazism in Germany, earned Sinclair the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Agnes Christina Laut (1871–1936) was a Canadian journalist, novelist, historian, and social worker. Born in rural Ontario, the family relocated to Winnipeg Manitoba in 1873. She attended the University of Manitoba but was forced to drop out due to health issues. At this time she became interested in writing and her work was published in the Manitoba Free Press. She obtained an editorial job working for the Press and worked there from 1895-1897. After a few years travelling abroad, she decided to move to the Wassaic, New York in 1900 which was close to her book publisher.

She published several novels and books on Canadian history. She visited the country regularly either working or doing research for her books. She was also involved in social work. Author Bio for Pratt, Fletcher

Murray Fletcher Pratt (25 April 1897—10 June 1956) was a science fiction and fantasy writer; he was also well-known as a writer on naval history and on the American Civil War.

Pratt attended Hobart College for one year. During the 1920s he worked for the Buffalo Courier-Express and on a Staten Island newspaper. In the late 1920s he began selling stories to pulp magazines. When a fire gutted his apartment in the 1930s, he used the insurance money to study at the Sorbonne for a year. After that he began writing histories.

Wargamers know Pratt as the inventor of a set of rules for civilian naval wargaming before the Second World War. This was known as the “Naval War Game” and was based on a wargame developed by Fred T. Jane involving dozens of tiny wooden ships, built on a scale of one inch to 50 feet. These were spread over the floor of Pratt’s apartment and their manoeuvres were calculated via a complex mathematical formula. Noted author and artist Jack Coggins was a frequent participant in Pratt’s Navy Game. Sprague de Camp met him through his wargaming group.

Pratt is best known for his fantasy collaborations with de Camp, the most famous of which is the humorous Harold Shea series, was eventually published in full as The Complete Compleat Enchanter. His solo fantasy novels Well of the Unicorn and The Blue Star are also highly regarded.

Ernie Pyle:

Born near Dana in 1900, was a newspaper columnist during World War II. He attended Indiana University but left before graduating to take a job at the LaPorte Herald, a northern Indiana newspaper. Around this time, Ernie met his wife, Geraldine, and they were married in 1925.

Ernie eventually got a job with the Scripps-Howard newspapers as a columnist. He and his wife traveled the country during the Great Depression and wrote columns describing life in America at that time. When war broke out in Europe, Pyle went to England to cover the Battle of Britain in 1940.

When America entered the war in 1941, Pyle signed on as a war correspondent. He wrote columns about what it was like to be an ordinary soldier and the everyday struggles they encountered. He traveled with American soldiers on the front lines in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. Ernie’s columns became so popular that they were published in over 400 daily newspapers nationwide during the war. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his columns in 1944.

In 1945, Ernie was assigned to cover the Pacific Theater of the war. He was killed on April 18, 1945, by Japanese sniper fire on the island of Ie Shima. Soldiers and citizens on the home front mourned the loss of Ernie Pyle because of his ability to put a human face on a dehumanizing war.

Nevile Henderson:

Sir Nevile Meyrick Henderson (1882-1942) was a British diplomat and Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Nazi Germany from 1937-1939. He was born on June 10, 1882 at Sedgwick Park near Horsham, Sussex, the third child of Robert and Emma Henderson. His uncle was Reginald Hargreaves, who married Alice Liddell, the original of Alice in Wonderland. He was educated at Eton and joined the Diplomatic Service in 1905. In the early 1920s, Henderson was stationed at the embassy in Turkey, where he played a major role in the often difficult relations between Britain and the new Turkish republic. He served as an envoy to France in 1928-1929 and as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between 1929-1935, where he was in close confidence with King Alexander and Prince Paul. After serving as Ambassador to Argentina from 1935-1937, the Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden, appointed him Ambassador in Berlin on May 28, 1937. Henderson was ambassador at the time of the 1938 Munich Agreement, and counselled Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to enter into it. Shortly thereafter, he returned to London for medical treatment, returning to Berlin in ill-health in February 1939. He wrote Failure of a Mission: Berlin 1937-1939 in London, which was published in 1940, but he succumbed to his illness on December 30, 1942.-scribd
