“Few chapters in the annals of American discovery in the once dark places of the New World Continent are more interesting to the modern-day reader, or more full of venturesome daring and hardy adventure, than the story told in the narrative of the Lewis and Clark Exploring Expedition in the years 1804-06. That notable expedition, fruitful in high and useful achievement, for the first time threw light upon the wilderness region that at that early era stretched from the mouth of the Missouri River to where the waters of the Columbia River enter the Pacific Ocean. The vast region now to be opened to civilization, and then known as the Louisiana Territory, came into the possession of the United States, at the farsighted instigation of President Jefferson, by a rare stroke of American diplomacy.”

The popularity of this guide led the Geological Survey of Canada to engage Dr. Baird to continue the series of books on the geology of the mountain national parks which had been initiated by Dr. Belyea. Between 1962 and 1967 Dr. Baird completed the text and provided pictures and sketches for guides to most of the mountain parks in Canada, which were published by the Geological Survey of Canada. Well illustrated, they provided excellent descriptions of the mountains, alpine lakes, glaciers and other physical features accessible by motor highway or walking trails in Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay, Waterton Lakes, Glacier and Mount Revelstoke National Parks. Dr. Baird expanded this series to provide geological histories of Prince Edward Island, Fundy, and Terra Nova Parks, and the national parks of Ontario.

“Klee Wyck” (1941) is a memoir by Canadian artist Emily Carr. Through short sketches, the artist tells of her experiences among First Nations people and cultures on British Columbia’s west coast. The book won the 1941 Governor General’s Award. The original, unpublished title for the book was “Stories in Cedar”. Carr instead chose “Klee Wyck”, a nickname given to her by the First Nations people of Ucluelet. It means ‘Laughing One’.

Author Bio for Carr, Emily

Emily Carr (1871-1945),Emily Carr was a Canadian artist and writer who was inspired by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. One of the first painters in Canada to adopt a Modernist and Post-Impressionist painting style, Carr did not receive widespread recognition for her work until the subject matter of her painting shifted from Aboriginal themes to landscapes—forest scenes in particular of British Columbia. As a writer, Carr was one of the earliest chroniclers of life in British Columbia.

In 1898, at age 27, Carr made the first of several sketching and painting trips to Aboriginal villages. She stayed in a village near Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, home to the Nuu-chah-nulth people, then known to English-speaking people as ‘Nootka’. In 1912, Carr took a sketching trip to First Nations’ villages in Haida Gwaii, the Upper Skeena River, and Alert Bay. Even though Carr left the villages of the Pacific Northwest, the impact of the people stayed with her and she adopted the Indian name Klee Wyck. Carr continued to travel throughout the late 1920s and 1930s away from Victoria. Her last trip north was in the summer of 1928, when she visited the Nass and Skeena rivers, as well Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. She also travelled to Friendly Cove and the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, and then up to Lillooet in 1933.Recognition of her work grew steadily. It was at the exhibition on West Coast Aboriginal art at the National Gallery in 1927 that Carr first met members of the Group of Seven, at that time Canada’s most recognized modern painters, who welcomed her into their ranks of Canada’s leading modernists. The encounter ended the artistic isolation of Carr’s previous 15 years, leading to one of her most prolific periods, and the creation of many of her most notable works. In 1937, Carr suffered her first heart attack, which marked the beginning of a decline in her health and a lessening of the energy required for painting. She began to devote more time to writing. Her first book, Klee Wyck, a collection of short stories based on her experiences with Aboriginal people, was published in 1941, a year that also effectively marked the end of her painting career. The book won a Governor General’s Award and was followed by the publication of four other books, two of them posthumously.

She also wrote of the subjects she painted—the sea, sky and forests of British Columbia. A personal and passionate manifesto of an extraordinary artist.

It features the work of the following individuals, amongst other greats—George Thomas Lanigan, William Henry Drummond, and James Demille. Here’s an excerpt from a poem entitled ‘To Mary’ by Joseph Howe: “Oh! blame me not, Mary, for gazing at you / Nor suppose that my thoughts from the Preacher were straying / Tho’ I stole a few glances—believe me ’tis true— / They were sweet illustrations of what he was saying.”

Lawrence Johnston Burpee (1885-1946) was a Canadian author and civil servant. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he joined the civil service in Ottawa at age 17 and remained with the government for his entire career. He served as private secretary to three successive Ministers of Justice. In addition to his government duties he was also a prolific writer delving into Canadian history, geography, and bibliography. He wrote and edited many books and articles including several entries in the Canadian encyclopedia, Canada and Its Provinces. In 1927 the University of Toronto conferred on him an honorary degree of LL.D. (Who Was Who, 1941-1950)

Author Bio for De Mille, James

James De Mille (1833-1880) was a Canadian writer of popular fiction in the Victorian era. Born in St. John, New Brunswick, he was educated at Acadia in Nova Scotia and Brown in Rhode Island. He briefly ran a bookstore from 1857 to 1861 before turning to teaching at Dalhousie University. During the last quarter of the 19th century he wrote several popular novels. He had a knack for writing intricate plots, moving between comedy and suspense and had a gift for writing good dialogue. His books ranged from juvenile boys stories such as B.O.W.C. Club (Brethren of the White Cross), comedy/satire as in The Lady of the Ice, to fantastical settings in books such as A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder.
Author Bio for Duncan, Sara Jeannette

Sara Jeannette Duncan (1861–1922) was a Canadian author and journalist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, she trained as a teacher but she soon began to concentrate on writing. In 1884 she worked for The Globe (now the Globe and Mail) writing articles and columns about literature and woman’s social life. In 1890 she married Everard Charles Cotes, a noted entomologist. She travelled with him to India where he was employed by the British government. After her marriage she concentrated on writing novels. Nine of her novels are set in India and most of her works are in the setting of Anglo-Indian society, of which she said “there is such abundance of material … it is full of such picturesque incidence, such tragic chance”. The progress of her novels show her experimenting with different genres that might sell well or were known to be popular, and they were of increasing complexity. Generally, she followed a nineteenth-century tradition of “society” novels in which personal and public politics might play a part. (Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
