    Sir Nevile Meyrick Henderson (1882-1942) was a British diplomat and Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Nazi Germany from 1937-1939. He was born on June 10, 1882 at Sedgwick Park near Horsham, Sussex, the third child of Robert and Emma Henderson. His uncle was Reginald Hargreaves, who married Alice Liddell, the original of Alice in Wonderland. He was educated at Eton and joined the Diplomatic Service in 1905. In the early 1920s, Henderson was stationed at the embassy in Turkey, where he played a major role in the often difficult relations between Britain and the new Turkish republic. He served as an envoy to France in 1928-1929 and as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between 1929-1935, where he was in close confidence with King Alexander and Prince Paul. After serving as Ambassador to Argentina from 1935-1937, the Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden, appointed him Ambassador in Berlin on May 28, 1937. Henderson was ambassador at the time of the 1938 Munich Agreement, and counselled Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to enter into it. Shortly thereafter, he returned to London for medical treatment, returning to Berlin in ill-health in February 1939. He wrote Failure of a Mission: Berlin 1937-1939 in London, which was published in 1940, but he succumbed to his illness on December 30, 1942.-scribd

    Madge Macbeth (1878-1965) was a Canadian author. She was born in Philadelphia and educated in Ontario. After graduation she toured as a mandolinist for two years. In 1901 she married Charles William Macbeth, a Canadian civil engineer. They lived in Detroit, then Ottawa but her husband died in 1904 leaving her to support two young children. She took to writing to support her family. She wrote advertising copy for the Canadian Pacific Railway and wrote stories for magazines. She published her first novel, “The Winning Game” in 1910. However, most of her stories appear to be quite standalone without the art, and we bring them to you un-illustrated.     Author Bio for Barr, Robert

    Robert Barr (1850-1912) was a Canadian writer. Born in Scotland, he was brought to Canada with his family at the age of four. They eventually settled in Windsor, Ontario. Barr began his career teaching but soon migrated to the Detroit Free Press where he worked as a reporter. In 1881, he moved to London, England to establish a weekly edition of the DFP. Whilst there he co-founded with Jerome K. Jerome a magazine for men called The Idler. Barr wrote several novels mostly based on crime detective themes which were popular in the late 19th century. Some notable books include The Measure of a Rule (available here at Faded Page), a coming of age story which contains some penetrating insight into the social realities of boarding school life in Toronto.     Author Bio for Buchan, John

    John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir GCMG GCVO CH PC (26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation.

    In 1910, Buchan wrote Prester John, the first of his adventure novels set in South Africa, and the following year he suffered from duodenal ulcers, a condition that later afflicted one of his fictional characters. At the same time, Buchan ventured into the political arena, and was adopted as Unionist candidate in March 1911 for the Borders seat of Peebles and Selkirk; he supported free trade, women’s suffrage, national insurance, and curtailing the powers of the House of Lords, though he did also oppose the welfare reforms of the Liberal Party, and what he considered to be the “class hatred” fostered by demagogic Liberals such as David Lloyd George.

    With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan went to write for the British War Propaganda Bureau and worked as a correspondent in France for The Times. He continued to write fiction, and in 1915 published his most famous work, The Thirty-Nine Steps, a spy-thriller set just prior to World War I. The novel featured Buchan’s oft used hero, Richard Hannay, whose character was based on Edmund Ironside, a friend of Buchan from his days in South Africa. A sequel, Greenmantle, came the following year. Buchan then enlisted in the British Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps, where he wrote speeches and communiqués for Sir Douglas Haig. Recognised for his abilities, Buchan was appointed as the Director of Information in 1917, under Lord Beaverbrook—which Buchan said was “the toughest job I ever took on”—and also assisted Charles Masterman in publishing a monthly magazine that detailed the history of the war, the first edition appearing in February 1915 (and later published in 24 volumes as Nelson’s History of the War). It was difficult, given his close connections to many of Britain’s military leaders, for Buchan to be critical of the British Army’s conduct during the conflict.
