Author Bio for Allen, Grant

His first books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). He was first influenced by associationist psychology as expounded by Alexander Bain and by Herbert Spencer, the latter often considered[by whom?] the most important individual in the transition from associationist psychology to Darwinian functionalism. In Allen’s many articles on flowers and on perception in insects, Darwinian arguments replaced the old Spencerian terms. On a personal level, a long friendship that started when Allen met Spencer on his return from Jamaica grew uneasy over the years. Allen wrote a critical and revealing biographical article on Spencer that was published after Spencer’s death.

After assisting Sir W. W. Hunter in his Gazeteer of India in the early 1880s, Allen turned his attention to fiction, and between 1884 and 1899 produced about 30 novels. In 1895, his scandalous book titled The Woman Who Did, promulgating certain startling views on marriage and kindred questions, became a bestseller. The book told the story of an independent woman who has a child out of wedlock.

In his career, Allen wrote two novels under female pseudonyms. One of these, the short novel The Type-writer Girl, he wrote under the name Olive Pratt Rayner.Another work, The Evolution of the Idea of God (1897), propounding a theory of religion on heterodox lines, has the disadvantage of endeavoring to explain everything by one theory.

Allen also became a pioneer in science fiction, with the 1895 novel The British Barbarians. This book, published about the same time as H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine, also described time travel, although the plot is quite different. Allen’s short story The Thames Valley Catastrophe (published 1901 in The Strand Magazine) describes the destruction of London by a sudden and massive volcanic eruption.

Many histories of detective fiction mention Allen as an innovator. His gentleman rogue, the illustrious Colonel Clay, is seen as a forerunner to later characters. In fact, Allen’s character bears strong resemblance to Maurice Leblanc’s French works about Arsène Lupin, published many years later; and both Miss Cayley’s Adventures and Hilda Wade feature early female detectives.

Author Cody, H. A. (Hiram Alfred)

Though he had written short stories in his younger years, Cody’s focus on fiction came later in his life. H.A. Cody published 25 books, in addition to several poems and newspaper articles. In 1927 he was appointed Archdeacon of Saint John; he served until his retirement in 1943. While more commonly recognized for his work in the ministry than for his writing, H.A. Cody was one of Canada’s most widely read authors. His publications, like those of the bestselling Ralph CONNOR, were amongst the first to be mass-produced in North America due to their accessible prose, Christian themes and appeal to a broad audience. It was during his time at King’s that Cody had his first prose published. “An Episode of the Miramichi Fire,” published in the King’s College Record (Jan 1895), is a story of survival during the great Miramichi fire of 1825. While a student Cody published other work in the Record, including pieces of literary criticism. Some of his more famous novels include The Frontiersman: A Tale of the Yukon (1910), The Long Patrol: A Tale of the Mounted Police (1912) and The King’s Arrow: A Tale of the United Empire Loyalists (1922). Most of Cody’s novels adhered to the conventions of the adventure genre. He often included romantic sub-plots in an effort to expand his readership beyond men. His faith played an important part in his novels, which always included a Christian message. While H.A. Cody is not considered a pioneer of Canadian literature, his novels deftly capture the interests and spirit of the age in which he lived and wrote.–thecanadianencyclopedia.ca.

Author Bio for Nordhoff, Charles Bernard

Charles Bernard Nordhoff (1 February 1887—10 April, 1947) was an American traveler and novelist who began life in London, England, born to American parents. Nordhoff’s parents returned to the United States with him in 1889, living first in Pennsylvania, then Rhode Island, and finally settling in California by 1898.

Nordhoff showed an early interest in writing. His first published work was an article in an ornithological journal, written in 1902 when he was just fifteen. At seventeen, he entered Stanford University, but transferred after one year to Harvard.

After graduation in 1909, Nordhoff worked for his father’s businesses, first spending two years in Mexico managing a sugar plantation, then four years as an executive of a tile and brick company in Redlands, California. He quit in 1916, signed up with the Ambulance Corps, and travelled to France. There he joined additional American expatriates as a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille. He finished World War I as a lieutenant in the US Army Air Service.

After leaving the service, Nordhoff stayed on in Paris, France, where he worked as a journalist and wrote his first book, The Fledgling. In 1919, he and another former Lafayette Squadron pilot, James Norman Hall, who was additionally an author and journalist, were asked to write a history of that unit. Neither man had known the other throughout the war. Their first literary collaboration, The Lafayette Flying Corps, was published in 1920.

The two authors then returned to the United States, sharing a rented house on Martha’s Vineyard, until given a commission by Harper’s Magazine to write travel articles set in the South Pacific. They went to Tahiti in the Society Islands for research and inspiration, and ended up staying, Nordhoff for twenty years, Hall for life. Their second book, Faery Lands of the South Seas, was serialised in Harper’s in 1920-21, then published in book form.

Nordhoff married a Tahitian woman with whom he would have four daughters and two sons. He wrote novels on his own for ten years, of which The Derelict (1928) was considered his finest solo effort. Nordhoff and Hall continued to jointly write travel and adventure articles for The Atlantic throughout the 1920s and early 1930s. They additionally co-authored another memoir of World War I, Falcons of France (1929). It was Hall who suggested they work on the Bounty trilogy.

Nordhoff, who would write in the mornings and spend the afternoons fishing, once explained how he and James Hall worked together. They initially drew up charts of all the characters, then would dole out the chapters to each other. For their joint works they each made an effort to write in the other’s style so as to achieve a reasonably smooth narrative.

After the Bounty Trilogy, Nordhoff and Hall’s most successful book was The Hurricane (1936). They continued their partnership writing novels until 1945. Nordhoff on his own would only produce one more solo book, In Yankee Windjammers (1940), a retelling of the ships, sailors, and way of life about which his grandfather had written.—Source: everipedia.org

Dramatizing the international sweep of Phyllis Bottome’s political ethics, feminism, and activism, Old Wine is as meaningful today as it was prescient at its publication in 1924. Old Wine traces the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the impact of modernity through an intricate network of political and sexual relationships among Viennese aristocrats, “new women, ” and Jews, all of whom suffer and survive their conflicts.

In her 60-year career she published 33 novels, several of them bestsellers, short stories, essays, biographies and memoirs. She lectured widely in Britain and America. She was translated into nine languages. Her 1937 novel The Mortal Storm predicted the horrific consequences of Fascism. MGM made a film of it, starring James Stewart — the studio’s first openly anti-Nazi film. It premiered in America in 1940, just as Hitler’s troops entered Paris, and was arguably influential in persuading the US to abandon its isolationist stance.—The Spectator

Enid Blyton (1897-1968) was a prolific English author of children’s books. Born in London, she began writing while still in school. Her first attempts at writing were rejected by publishers which just made her more determined to succeed. She trained as a teacher and in her spare time continued to write. Her first book, a collection of poems, was published in 1922. Her first series of books, “Old Thatch”, began in 1934 and eventually encompassed 28 books. In the 1940’s she began to churn out books sometimes three or four per year. By the 1950’s she was publishing upwards of 50 books per year. In all, she wrote over 750 books which sold over 600 million copies. While critics called her writing unimaginative and lacking literary merit, this did not stop her adoring fans from scooping her books off the shelf. Even after her death, her endearing stories continue to draw the rapt attention of children everywhere. (Enid Blyton Society)

Most of Blyton’s books were illustrated. Unfortunately, many of the illustrators are not yet in the public domain here in Canada. Each edition of her books frequently brought a different set of illustrations by a different illustrator. When possible, we include the illustrations from any edition where the artist is in the public domain. We have a few of her early nature books which we have chosen not to publish, as the art is integral to the book. However, most of her stories appear to be quite standalone without the art, and we bring them to you un-illustrated. Many of the first edition illustrations can be found on the Enid Blyton Society website.
